Conditioners for Problem Hair:
In addition to the special rinses, there are other conditioners which can be used for problem hair between shampoos.
If your hair is oily, and your brush doesn't seem to remove the excess oil between shampoos, try this: apply a witch hazel to a dab of cotton and work it directly into the scalp. Separate the hair into small sections and swab the scalp around each section. When your whole head tingles, you hve done a thorough job.
(*Civilla's note: That sounds cool, although why we never thought to just WASH our hair when we had these problems is beyond me -- probably because of all the hassle I described in the last two posts, including setting and drying, etc.).
There are special oil conditioners for dry hair. Or you might heat olive or vegetable oil and apply it with a swab of cotton as directed above. After such a hot-oil treatment, cover your head with a bath towel. This treatment should be followed by a shampoo. Leave the oil on for several hours before washing, to give it a chance to permeate the scalp and the hair. (*Civilla's note: This sounds great, but remember to shampoo afterwards, as mentioned above.)
(*Civilla's note: I also remember a lot more people having dandruff back then. I think this came from not washing the hair enough. Remember Head and Shoulders shampoo? That is a very good shampoo, even if you do not have dandruff. Also, Selsun Blue? Actually, nowadays, we are told that too infrequent washing of the hair causes the oil glands to become plugged up, so that they cannot release the necessary oil, causing dry hair and a flaky, itchy scalp. Frequent washing with the proper shampoo for your type of hair, plus good brushing, seems to be the key to healthy hair and scalp.)
